We had an excellent dinner here with friends last weekend. The Scottish decor is so great, and the service is top notch. I had the prime rib entree and it was fantastic, and my husband had the seasonal turkey entree, which he said was delicious. One of our friends is vegan and he was very happy with their cauliflower tikki masala entree. Great drinks and dessert too. Valet parking is available, or else you have to find parking on a crowded steet. If you've never been, you should see it at least once. Very unique restaurant.
Classic Los Angeles steakhouse with alll the charm of old Hollywood with timeless elegance. The decor is dated but that contributes the ambiance. The food is consistently good as demonstrated by the number of regulars that filled the bar. There were just as many people eating as drinking in the bar area. The drink were all well made and the bartenders paid close attention to detail. The staff is friendly and the customer service was on point. Parking is offered via valet which is pricey by my standards. But I tend to watch pennies closely. Ample street parking is offered via meter along the primary street. That is what I opted for rolling solo. If I had a date, I may have chosen to valet park.
2nd year in a row coming here for the holidays, we love the Christmas spirit and the old world charm of all the wood and decorations. During the holidays they have carolers that will come by the tables and sing which is a nice touch. Not sure about others but we don't really come here for the food, I'd say it's OK but really more for the ambiance.
(Dined 11/26/24 TU @ 4:00pm and many times over the years): What the Dickens... I didn't see anyone wearing a tam o'shanter! For over 100 years (est. 1922), Tam O'Shanter continued to be Los Angeles' oldest restaurant operated by the same family (e.g. Frank and Van de Kamp) in the same location. This place was always reserved for special occasions whenever I came since I was young to now an adult. On this particular occasion, I partook in their annual (nearly 25 years) "A Christmas Carol Dickens Dinner" https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=W0TlTuWqPhYeFz6fz0a_hA which I only recently found out about. Would I have a Dickens of a time at this dinner theatre event sans a tam o'shanter? PARKING (FREE) I parked in their private large lot. Otherwise, there were plenty of spots along the main drag of Los Feliz Blvd. and all surrounding residential side streets - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A sizable establishment with multiple dining rooms filled with booths/chairs/tables, a welcoming bar, a Scottish pub motif throughout with displays of tartans, whiskeys, hung framed pictures on dark wood walls, and during this time many holiday decorations. No natural lighting (unless you sat outside) while warm electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were TVs around the bar but no background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=0&select=d5bMUszleWiFj3EhvGBDaA ATTIRE Business casual, so I was in a dress shirt, dress pants, and Doc Martens. OVERALL An incredible time was once again had at Tam O'Shanter, and the dinner theatre I specifically came for was a holiday treat. Everything was handled with an air of class without the stuffiness, and the background of Walt Disney history was something to research. The menu was highly varied, the prices were a bit elevated, and the service was amazing. And, whenever possible I liked to support small family-owned businesses. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $247.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS
When I heard that this place existed I knew I had to make an effort to come next time I was in town and I'm glad I did! I love visiting these sort of historic gems, old unchanged staples with strong reputations for a reason. Tam O'Shanter did not disappoint, what with its detailed Scottish decor that genuinely feels out of time, and it's excellent food and drink offerings! I opted for the california cut prime rib which absolutely hit the spot -- the perfect amount for my appetite. Plus the Yorkshire pudding, creamed spinach and mashed potatoes never tasted so good. I also loved their salted caramel old fashioned, absolutely delightful balance of mildly sweet and whiskey flavor. Also a big shout out to the lovely server who brought us over an entire vintage booklet on the history of the restaurant that was so insanely detailed and fascinating and I kinda wish I coulda read the whole thing but it was delicate so after a brief skim I returned it back to their hands. Rad though, y'all should reproduce and sell these booklets!
Came here for lunch after they opened and sat on the patio. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich. The sandwich is very crispy, has a big piece of chicken, and it comes with lots of fries on the side. It is definitely filling for a lunch meal. Service was great, they're very attentive. Parking- they have their own lot
Had a fantastic birthday dinner here. We had a party of 14. It was a surprise and it worked out perfectly. Melissa was our server and she was great. Handled our whole table easily! Food was great, drinks were good. Desert was so so good too. Highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding, a la mode!! We will be back. Sign up for the rewards too!
Established in 1922, Tam O'Shanter claims to be the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles to be operated by the same family in the same location. A legendary steakhouse famous for their prime rib and Yorkshire pudding, this restaurant has an impressive history. The fun decor and "old-world" atmosphere alone are enough for me to want to return, but I found the food to be top notch, as well. Founded by the same people that later created the Lawry's restaurant chain, this is a place that should be on everyone's radar. You probably can't go wrong with any of the world-famous prime rib options, but the Tam O'Shanter cut felt like the natural choice. Served with mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, and a choice of creamed spinach or creamed corn, definitely try to come hungry. Overall, my experience here was great. The prime rib was cooked to perfection, and the Yorkshire pudding and other sides did not disappoint. The ambiance is really unrivaled. I loved looking at all the decor. At the end of our meal, we even got to take pictures at the famous Walt Disney table, where he regularly dined at. I would not hesitate to come back.
